Our History & Legacy
The Fishburne Tobacco Press traces its origins to inventor Francis B. Fishburne of Asheville, North Carolina, whose mid 20th century hydraulic press designs became foundational to modern tobacco packing systems. His patented innovations from the 1950s and early 1960s introduced a more efficient, consistent method for compressing loose tobacco into hogsheads — a breakthrough that helped mechanize an industry long dependent on manual labor.
Menzel LP, an established manufacturer of custom web‑handling and processing equipment based in Spartanburg, SC, acquired the Fishburne tobacco press technology in the early 2000s. Today, Menzel LP supports and advances the Fishburne press platform for facilities around the world.
